Cloud Computing - An Intro

Cloud computing is an emerging computing technology that uses the internet and central remote servers to maintain data and applications. Cloud computing allows consumers and businesses to use applications without installation and access their personal files at any computer with internet access. This technology allows for much more efficient computing by centralizing storage, memory, processing and bandwidth. Cloud computing is broken down into three segments: "applications," "platforms," and "infrastructure." Each segment serves a different purpose and offers different products for businesses and individuals around the world. In June 2009, a study conducted by VersionOne found that 41% of senior IT professionals actually don't know what cloud computing is and two-thirds of senior finance professionals are confused by the concept, highlighting the young nature of the technology. In Sept 2009, an Aberdeen Group study found that disciplined companies achieved on average an 18% reduction in their IT budget from cloud computing and a 16% reduction in data center power costs.

ATI Radeon HD 5970 Dual GPU Specs Revealed - How about Nividia?

We've come across an early listing of AMD's upcoming dual-GPU Hemlock card, or the Radeon HD 5970 to be exact. AMD recently dropped the X2 moniker from its dual-GPU cards for its upcoming generations, which translates into a few more numbers for consumers to be confused by.

Bear in mind that the specifications are still unofficial, so these numbers can be taken with a grain of salt. The HD 5970 apparently packs dual RV870 chips each clocked at 725MHz and 2GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 1000MHz on dual 256-bit buses. If you're thinking these are HD 5850 clocks, you are right. However, the HD 5970 has 2 x 1600 stream processors and 2 x 80 texture units, twice that of an HD 5870.

Although there is still no word on power consumption levels, we are anticipating a number slightly more than 300W. AMD is still facing serious shortages of its HD 5000-series cards, so don't expect to be able to get your hands on a dual-GPU HD 5970 anytime soon. Nonetheless, Hemlock will secure the GPU performance crown for AMD over the next couple of months.

Originally conceived and developed at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), the WetPC underwater computer combines a comprises a miniature PC with a mask-mounted virtual display and a unique 5-button chordic graphical user interface (CGUI) that can be operated using one-hand.

The computer itself sits in a waterproof housing on the diver's air tank and is attached via cable to the mask-mounted display that produces high contrast "floating" visual interface.

The waterproof 5-key Kord Pad is attached to the diver's belt or chest and is operated by pressing single or multiple keys This process (called chording) is likened to playing a piano allowing the user to interact with the computer in a very natural way. The pad can be used with either hand and enables the diver to access and record information with one hand whilst swimming.

The Kord Interface Technology is completely distinct from other systems because it displays graphic buttons on the screen that match the buttons the user needs to press on the hand-piece to perform a particular action - this makes underwater computing a far more user-friendly prospect.

Rule 49 O

Text of Rule "49-O"

49-O. Elector deciding not to vote.-If an elector, after his electoral roll number has been duly entered in the register of voters in Form-17A and has put his signature or thumb impression thereon as required under sub-rule (1) of rule 49L, decided not to record his vote, a remark to this effect shall be made against the said entry in Form 17A by the presiding officer and the signature or thumb impression of the elector shall be obtained against such remark.

Present Implications of Rule 49-O

Since the ballot paper / Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) contains only the list of candidates, a voter cannot record his vote under Section 49-O directly. He must inform the presiding officer at the election booth. This violates the secrecy of the ballot. However, with paper ballot a different method is used to "waste" ones vote, which is stamping on multiple candidates. In fact this was the standard method of giving null votes without violating secrecy before the advent of the EVM.

At present, in an election, a winner will be declared irrespective of the number of 'non-votes'. However, a note of every 'non-vote' will be made with the Election Officer, and the total number of non-voters will, presumably, be available under the Right to Information Act.

After Vista's chronic development delays, Windows chief Steve Sinofsky appears to be making the trains run on time for Windows 7's release.

Microsoft plans to start handing out the first beta copies of Windows 7 on January 13, according to recent postings on three of the software giant's blogs.

The company already handed out pre-beta copies of the pending replacement for Windows Vista at two major developer conferences it held in Los Angels late October and early November.

However, the beta copies to be given out beginning in January will be "feature complete," unlike the ones handed out this fall.

B. Ramalinga Raju, the disgraced IT mogul behind India’s largest corporate fraud, was arrested yesterday on charges of cheating and forgery, according to an Andhra Pradesh state police chief.

Mr Raju, the former chairman of Satyam, India’s fourth-largest out-sourcing company, was arrested with B. Rama Raju, his brother and co-founder, on charges of criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy, cheating, falsification of records and forgery. The Indian Government also disolved Satyam’s board yesterday and plans to appoint its own directors next week.

Mr Raju will appear before the country’s market regulator today amid doubts that Satyam, which counts scores of blue-chip companies among its clients, has enough money to pay its 50,000 staff this month’s wages.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India, the credibility of which hangs in the balance as a result of the scandal, will ask just how the former star businessman was able to orchestrate a £1 billion fraud by wildly overstating profitability, cash reserves and other assets for several years. Mr Raju faces up to ten years in prison if found guilty of misleading investors.

The fraud included $1 billion (£660 million) of purely fictitious cash, which Mr Raju had claimed the company had on its books, according to a confession he released on Wednesday. That he was able to get away with such a rudimentary deception has called into question the role of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), which had audited Satyam’s accounts since 2000.
